About Stephen Wood

Stephen Wood is composer, performer, and educator based in Atlanta, Ga. Wood's strengths lie in his versatility, attention to nuance, and thorough understanding of many styles and genres – from the classical to contemporary. Committed to expanding traditional forms, Wood continues to push the relationship between groove and sound-scape in his compositions. His creative voice reveals a detailed attention to harmony and rhythm, and a great passion for the expressive power of sound and improvisation.

Stephen's main compositional vehicle and creative performing project is The Stephen Wood Ensemble. With 10 years of performing and directing experience, Stephen has released two acclaimed CD's. The Stephen's Wood Ensemble's 2006 release "Inaudible" is an impressive full-length record featuring an orchestrated nonet masterfully improvising over Stephen Wood's evocative compositions. Under the name Postal, Wood's 2004 debut release "Theory of Chaconne" begins to hone his taste for expressive sound with a sextet of Hammond organ grooves.

Along side his modern jazz experiments, Stephen's classical chamber works bring forth and meld his cross-cultural music studies into a deep, thoughtful, more traditional art form. Stephen's compositions for chamber ensembles include works for string quartet, string quintet, string trio, violin and cello duo, solo violin, woodwind quartet, and works for modern dance choreography.

As a graduate of The Ohio State University with a B.A. in Music Composition, Stephen is currently pursuing an M.M in Jazz Studies at Georgia State University.
